Purpose of Alberta Health Care
Alberta Health Care exists to ensure that all residents of Alberta can access essential medical services, regardless of their financial situation. Its mission is to support and improve the overall health and quality of life of everyone living in the province.

New or Returning to Alberta?
If you are new to Alberta or moving back, you need to register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) before you can receive insured physician or hospital services.
Your AHCIP card is proof that you are eligible for provincial healthcare. Keep it current and carry it with you.
How to register:
- Check Your Eligibility
- You must live in Alberta and be legally entitled to be in Canada.
- Gather Required Documents
- Proof of identity (passport, birth certificate, or government-issued photo ID)
- Proof of legal entitlement (Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work/study permit)
- Proof of Alberta residency (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)
- Complete the Application
- Download the form online or pick one up at our office.
- Include personal details, dependent information (if any), and contact information.
- Submit Your Application
- Bring your completed form and documents to our office. We will process your application.
- Receive Your AHCIP Card
- Once approved, your card will be mailed to you. Keep it with you as proof of eligibility.
Replacing Your Alberta Health Care Card
If your card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can request a replacement through our office.
You will need to present valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s licence or passport).
Replacement cards are mailed directly to you from Alberta Health.
Eligibility Requirements for an AHCIP Card
To qualify for an Alberta Health Care card, you must:
- Residency
- Be a resident of Alberta.
- Be legally entitled to stay in Canada.
- Spend at least 183 days in Alberta within any 12-month period.
- Legal Status in Canada
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work/study permit.
- Coverage Start Date
- If moving from within Canada: Coverage begins the first day of the third month after arriving.
Example: Arrive on March 15 → Coverage starts June 1. - If moving from outside Canada: Coverage starts on the day you arrive in Alberta or the date listed in your immigration documents.
- If moving from within Canada: Coverage begins the first day of the third month after arriving.
- Providing Accurate Information
- You must give correct personal details for yourself and any dependents.
Note: Some healthcare services are not covered by AHCIP, such as most prescription drugs, dental care, and certain therapies. These may require private insurance or out-of-pocket payment.
Eligible individuals can register or update their AHCIP details in person at our office.
